Over here at MomaLino, we have been a little quiet lately, but the critters have been very busy. Besides painting our favorite mushroom loving, cat fairies, we have been preparing to teach a 3 day Watercolor Color Critter and Animation class for West View HUB.

Over the course of 3 days, MomaLino mama, Jen Gallagher, and 14 students will learn the basics of whimsical watercolor techniques while creating our very own watercolored paper doll critters. On the final day, we will break into teams and stop motion animate our creations, bringing them to life!

Watercolor is an incredibly accessible media form. It is expressive and fluid, dynamic and daring, and full of fantastical fun. What better way to let our imaginations go wild than picking up a brush and letting our paints mix on the page.

Many of you may be intimidated…and I know that was a concern for the upcoming class, so we have prepared a kit of parts that has pre-drawn critter components that students can mix and match and trace onto their watercolor sheet. Sometimes, we all just need to skip the drawing and get to the good stuff!

I think this is an important trick for those of you just getting started in watercolor…don’t sweat the drawing phase! Many artists provide a photo or an ink drawing that you can use along with their online tutorial. You can also search online for a precedent photo or image to trace over or refer to while you are painting. Remember to always credit your source!

Here are some of the paper critters we may be creating…I am telling the students they can mix and match parts as well, so I can’t wait to see the results!
